Today we rid ourselves of one of the biggest leaches on our business. Not a client per se, but a third party who we had partnered with a while back. Initially the partnership seemed like a good idea because it had the potential to bring new clients to us (which it didn’t…any clients we got from this organization we had before partnering), bring in extra revenue (which it did…albeit marginally), and provide an opportunity to some of my elite athletes that they would otherwise not have had (which it did). Ultimately though, this third party took advantage of us by taking more and providing less than what the original agreement had been. They had the terrible trifecta of paying less than originally agreed upon, taking up more of our facility than originally agreed upon, and forcing me to assume the majority of THEIR responsibilities. The odd thing is that when I brought these issues to their attention, the head of the group thought that I had it out for his business (which he had almost no hand in) and made the decision to move on and out rather than change (or even dialogue for that matter). Kinda laughable really. Especially considering that the move makes zero business sense for them. The move is gonna cost them more money (in initial investments in the partnership that can now not be amortized, pending costs from the move, and loss of revenue from closing down) than they could recoup over 1-2 years. The decision was based on a purely emotional response to something that had nothing to do with me. Overall, the end of this partnership is working out well and has been a great learning experience on the importance of trusting your instincts. You see, against my better judgment I agreed to the partnership initially because it provided some things I was desperately in need of (primarily money and an opportunity for my athletes). In retrospect I should have trusted my gut to not partner with one of the few people I’ve ever met who leaves practically EVERYONE with a bad first impression. Good partnerships aren’t about money. Good partnerships are about good people.

My business, Athletic Lab, has been open for almost a year now. Business has picked up slowly but steadily throughout the year. Overall, a little slower than my usual fatally optimistic expectations but growth is good nonetheless and we’ve moved beyond the proverbial tipping point that all businesses must reach before they either fail or succeed (we’re succeeding ). One thing that’s helped with current growth is that I now have an assistant helping me out so that I can hand off some duties to allow me to work ON my business rather than just IN it. More importantly, he’s been able to work ON the business as well as I have him doing guerilla marketing all over town. Handing out flyers at sporting good stores, soccer matches, and business parks; talking to soccer moms, runners, and businesses around the Triangle; helping me set up and spread the word at expos at sporting events. The hard work has been paying off as we’re getting more interest than ever before. This is a great contrast to the lousy returns (nothing?) we’ve had from advertising in a local magazine and online. I’ve known all along that business would thrive when people knew we existed. Because I was completely new to the area and had to build client base from scratch it took a while. But increasing word of mouth from existing clients and the current guerilla marketing led by my assistant has proven far more effective than more traditional routes.

For the past couple months, I’ve been putting in 75 hour weeks at Athletic Lab. Days typically start at 6am (with the first training session at 7) and end around 7 or 8pm. Add to that about 10-12 hours between Saturday and Sunday. And 2-3 speaking engagements a month that take me out of town. The past two days have been 15 hour days and yesterday I didn’t see my daughter other than coming home to find her sleeping.

So much for life balance.

Although difficult, I’m inching towards the long term goal of doing what I love while having financial freedom and some free time to do things outside of work. I’ve heard that one of the biggest problems facing start-up business owners is burn-out. Although I don’t feel anywhere close to this I can see how easy it could happen if someone lost sight of the progress being made. The financial, time, and emotional investment of pursuing something as all-consuming as a start-up business could easily become overwhelming. I’ve found it helps to make sure you learn from the inevitable mistakes while focusing on the progress being made.

If you don’t market your business who will? This is something I’ve learned over the past two years as I scrape and scramble to make my business thrive. Anyone that’s spent any time with me over the past 4 months would think that I only own shirts embroidered or printed with the company name and website. Likewise, I always have several business cards and brochures handy to give to the next potential customer.

This is especially important considering that both myself and the business are completely new to NC and we started with no existing clients or local connections. So while I strive to build the business through word of mouth, it’s been important to make sure I’m a walking billboard wherever I go. Because you can’t spread the word if you don’t first have the mouths.

Today is tax day. Since 1955, April 15th has been the day that all working Americans need to file their tax returns. Yet for the second straight year I’ve had to file for an extension. And I’m not alone. Thousands of Americans do the same thing. And millions more don’t get there tax returns in the mail until the final day. It’s not like the date is a surprise or anything or there isn’t sufficient time to get things done. Yet many Americans fail to get it done any sooner than they have to. And many others need more than the allotted time. Are we procrastinating? Many probably are. Most in fact. My wife ribs me about waiting til the last second for almost everything. I don’t for a second consider myself a procrastinator though. I think that in many people’s cases, including my own, we are not someone who waits until the last second to get something done. We are actually someone who does things the first available second they have to get it done…just something to think about the next time you call someone a procrastinator.

Dolly Parton ain’t got nothin’ on me. Well come to think of it she does have two pretty big things – a beautiful voice and a taste for country music…what did you think I was referring to?

For the past 3 months I’ve had at least two days a week where I’ve been starting my day at 5am (for a 5:45 training session at Athletic Lab) and not leaving the training center until 9 (or later). We’re open 7 days a week and most weeks and I’d guestimate that my weekly work hours are approaching and sometimes exceeding triple digits. I’m handling it ok but I don’t want it to stay like this forever. Thankfully my wife and daughter come in to the center several days a week so I’m able to see them even while I’m working (and my wife helps out!).

The business is at a place where it’s still beneficial for me to do almost everything myself. But things have been picking up pretty steadily. And at an increasing rate. If there’s such a thing as a tipping point for a business I think we’re quickly approaching it.

All this is giving me reason to consider if the next step for the business is to hire someone to help. I have some great assistants now who are all either working in an intern capacity or sweat-equity barter in exchange for training at Athletic Lab. And we get at least 20 unsolicited applications for employement or internship every month. This is a luxury of a growing business in a still sinking economy.

So the time is coming. It will surely be an expense that may take a month or more to pay off but at our current rate of growth it’s likely an investment in future growth that needs to be made. Not only that but it will afford me some more time to spend working on my business rather than mostly in it and will allow me to have more than a free day or two each month. It’s a nice crossroads to be at.

When it rains it pours. My mom used to say that when things got rough and there’s definitely some truth to the saying. The last 6 weeks it’s poured. First, I had the hard drive on my iMac fail, then 10 days later the 1 TB external hard drive that served as a partial backup to the iMac’s hard drive failed before I had a chance to back it up. This took with it 99% of my family pictures and the overwhelming majority of my presentations, writings, videos and research from the past decade. I also received 3 moving violations, had one car accident, my replacement rental car ran out of gas not once but twice (who knew the Dodge Charger they gave me while my car was getting repaired would get less than 18mpg!!!), I lost two of our most loyal clients due to a move, lost (or had stolen…I’m not sure which) one of my better digital cameras while at the USATF Combined Event Nationals, had my most highly visited website shut down without warning by our webhost, had all 4 toilets at Athletic Lab clogged simultaneously for several days, experienced dramatically increased business costs that all seemed to come at one time, and had a minor falling out with one of my better elite athletes. And my dad’s health was starting to fail on top of that. For a while it seemed things just kept piling on. All the while though I made a concerted effort to recognize all the good things that have happened in that same time frame…a very successful USA Weightlifting certification course held at Athletic Lab, teaching at 2 of the biggest USATF Level 1 schools in the past 10 years on back to back weekends, having the Carolina Railhawks plug Athletic Lab at the half time of their March games, Spring time’s warmer weather finally showing up, finally getting a formal agreement with a local school to use their track (I had been training my elite track and field group on facilities either with an informal agreement….several of which fell through, or bandito style….which was likely to get us kicked off), increasing our client number by 30% in one month, and having one of my athletes who tore his Achilles and didn’t have medical coverage finally get some help after 6 weeks of nothing.

Keeping focused on the good helped.

Lesson learned: Remember with the ups come the downs. Without Ying there is no Yang. If everything was great all the time we’d never be able to appreciate it.

I just returned from teaching at another USATF coaching education school. This one was in Brooklyn, NY. NY is the state where I was born and I’ve spent about 2/3rds of my life there in several cities around the state. Having recently moved to the Triangle region of NC (via a 10 month stay in Ohio), my visit back to NY really gave me a deeper appreciation for where I am today. In NC, the weather’s nicer, people are friendly and the dollar goes a heck of a lot further. While nothing can match the energy of a city like New York, I’m at a point where the quality of my life isn’t dictated by the fact that I can get anything or do anything I want at all times of the day and night. I’m loving it where I am NC. It seems to have everything i’d want from the North and everything I’d want from the South with nothing I don’t want from either.

2 weeks ago I was able to meet up with 2 of my former athletes from West Point as they drove from Georgia to DC. Not too long before that a different set of athletes from West Point came up to visit us and get in a workout at Athletic Lab. Before that I met up with one of my team captains from the track team as he made an ungodly pilgrimage through North Carolina up to Alaska. Before that I met up with my old training partner, who only 3 months later would be in Vancouver winning a gold medal in the 4 man bobsled.

One of the things that I most enjoyed about working at a place like the US Military Academy was the people I was able to meet and develop relationships. I also had many good friends from my youth who have moved very far away. I was concerned that after moving for the 3rd time in as many years that these relationships might be lost so it’s nice to be able to keep in touch and see these people.

As the world becomes more open and people relocate to different cities, states and even countries, there’s nothing better than being able to see old friends.

In my previous blog post I mentioned some things I do to increase productivity. Of all of them the one that might be most easily picked up by others is making use of what might otherwise seem like wasted time.

Just because you’re stuck in line at the DMV or airport, waiting to pick someone up or be picked up, or in grid locked traffic doesn’t mean the time has to be wasted. Find something productive to do. We’ve all got dozens of menial tasks that don’t take long individually and are easy to put off because they seem so small. The problem is that those little things can quickly add up and collectively they can really become something that would take a huge chunk of time. If you’re someone who has lots to do and gets frustrated by wasted down time, don’t fear, there’s hope. The key is to take care of the little things whenever you get a free moment so they don’t accumulate in to an unmanageable task.

If you have a smartphone, don’t waste its power playing games. Unwaste your wasted time by answering emails, updating your calendar, or brainmapping what you need to do. And even if you don’t have a smartphone (what busy person doesn’t though?) or you temporarily lost it (as I tend to do about once a week) consider getting a moleskine or other similarly handy notebook (not the laptop kind…the old school notebook kind). I find my moleskine to be great for list keeping, writing out blogs when away from a computer, or outlining tasks. In fact, I actually find the blank page of a moleskine to be far less restrictive and void of the many distractions of a computer. They are great for jotting things down as they come to you.

You can also use the time to make and return phone calls. I’m actually pretty terrible at connecting via phone because I’m training people for most of the day and I try not to answer or make calls during face-to-face meetings or when I’m training someone. So whenever I find myself with a couple minutes to spare I’m on the phone catching up on my voicemails and missed calls.

Finally, here’s some advice on getting things done on flights. Don’t let the cramped seating, dry air and absence of wifi or power slow down your productivity train. I make the habit of answering emails on my iPhone right up until they close the cabin doors of the jet (and sometimes later if I feel like tolerating the glare of people who believe the airline perpetuated myth that leaving your phone on during flight is some kind of danger). Then during the 5-15 minutes at the beginning and end of the flight when all electronics are supposed to be turned off, I pull out my trusty moleskine or read the latest sport science research article I’ve printed in hard copy to take with me. If I know I’ll have at least a 15 minute window during the middle of the flight where ‘use of electronics is approved’ I’ll pull out my laptop. In fact, in the 3 years after I left my doctoral studies at LSU (prior to completing my dissertation) to take a job coaching at Army, the only time I could ever find to work on my doctoral dissertation between 50+ hours a week of Army responsibilities and another 30+ to run my company, was on the flights I would take 4-6 times per month. While these 10-20 minute blocks of time didn’t amount to much individually, the work accomplished quickly added up and I finished my dissertation shortly after resigning from my job at Army.

Which brings me to quote that was recently featured on Athletic Lab’s wipeboard:

If you can move a grain of sand a day; eventually you will move a mountain.

If you make the most of what might otherwise seem like wasted time you’ll easily find yourself more productive than ever.
